Our History & Establishment in Morwell’s Community

Italian Hospitality & Country Town Life Merge to Create Something Uniquely Australian For the Entire Community to Enjoy.

The construction of the Morwell Power Station and other large industrial projects in the 1950s and '60s attracted many newly arrived Italian migrants in search of jobs, mostly single men or men with families who came intending to save enough to bring out the rest of the family. They decided the Latrobe Valley was an excellent place to raise a family, and in 1960, a small group of Italians and Australians established an association. A team of trustees came together, and the way was paved towards an Italian Social Club.

Early Days

The first assembly of the Italian community of the Latrobe Valley was held on the 4th of November, 1960, at the Morwell RSL Hall. Some 400 people attended the meeting chaired by Armando Pistrin, and a motion to form an Italian Australian Social Club was passed. Luigi Sola, who had inspired the club's establishment, was elected first President.

Years of Growth

Although the idea of the Club was conceived in Traralgon, setting up headquarters in Morwell made sense. This was due to its more central location and the larger Italian population. Land was purchased, and a transported shed was the first clubhouse. The Club grew rapidly as a social and sporting facility, and a soccer team entered the Latrobe Valley Soccer League. Two years later, the name changed to "Falcons", with both organisations still working as "Sister" clubs.

Today

Today's Italian Australian Club is a multi-purpose social, sporting & cultural complex catering to everyone. The Club today epitomises Australia's multiculturalism and has embraced all community members. The success of which can be seen in the diversity of membership.

The Club today is all its founders would have dreamed it to be.
